Hosshinmon-oji to Hongu Grand Shrine

Kumano pilgrimage climax! Hosshinmon to Kumano Hongu Grand Shrine

Hosshinmon-oji is the gate to sacred area of Hongu Taisha.

This route starts at the Hosshinmon gate, said to inspire a belief in the Buddhist faith. This area is known for its trees, which are bright green in the spring and deep red in the autumn. A gentle walk on a downhill slope leads to a beautiful overlook of the Kumano River and the largest torii gate in Japan. Continuing downhill, you will walk through a small village and arrive in the precincts of the Kumano Hongu Grand Shrine.
